Metal Detecting on Your Land – How It Works

This is a unique opportunity for landowners to uncover the hidden history of their land. From centuries old coins to lost family items, our finds have amazed and connected landowners to their heritage.

We’re a small, respectful team of five detectorists with low-impact digging methods, holes are neat, backfilled, and barely noticeable. We build close relationships with landowners, returning across multiple visits and sharing everything we find. We also create YouTube videos of each detecting day, offering a fun, educational look at the discoveries made on your land.

We’re fully insured members of the National Council for Metal Detecting (NCMD), with up to £10 million public liability cover each.

All historically significant finds are recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, contributing to the broader understanding of your land’s past.

We offer up to £100 per day* for permission to detect, providing landowners with a helpful extra income. For example, 50 acres could bring in £1,333 over 17 days of detecting. Use the estimator form on this page to calculate your potential earnings.

If we discover anything valued over £1,000, we split the reward 50/50 with you.

If you’re interested in giving permission, just fill out the form below to get started.

What Our Landowners Say

“Honestly, I was amazed by what they uncovered. I had no clue that medieval history was sitting quietly under my field all this time. The Bearded Bleepers were professional, respectful, and really passionate about what they do. They found some incredible items, like a dagger pommel, crotal bell, sword belt hanger, and a stunning William III silver shilling. Everything was logged with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and they even sent over dig videos and an interactive map showing exactly where things were found. It really opened my eyes to the story of this land.”

Leigh, Landowner in Ockley

“Letting The Bearded Bleepers explore the old WW2 bunkers and fields on my property turned out to be a great decision. They were very transparent and shared a brilliant video of everything they found. William III coins, a cartwheel penny, and some fascinating wartime relics like badges and buttons. It really made me stop and think about the layers of history right beneath the surface. I’ve definitely developed a deeper appreciation for it all.”

Ashley, Landowner in Dunsfold

“When I first agreed to let The Bearded Bleepers detect around my stables and paddocks, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I was genuinely impressed. They were thoughtful, especially around the horses, and left everything just as they found it, every hole neatly filled. What really stood out, though, were the finds. One in particular caught my attention: a button from a Napoleonic French soldier, possibly a prisoner of war who once worked my fields. I never imagined something like that could be lying beneath the ground here. It’s been a fascinating experience.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my land be left with unsightly holes?

No, we use specialist spades that cut through the turf neatly and allow it to be rolled back. When the hole is backfilled, the turf plug is lowered back into position, minimizing disturbance to your land.

Do I get to see the finds you make on my land?

If you are present when we finish detecting, we will display the finds for you to see. If you are not present, we will send photos and any accompanying information we find after researching the finds. We also make YouTube videos of most of or metal detecting trips you can watch.

Why do you need permission from me?

In order to use a metal detector on private property, it is important to get permission from the landowner. This shows respect for the owner’s property and ensures that there will be no legal issues or trespassing.

Before we start detecting on your land, we will sign a permission agreement form with the landowner .

What are the benefits of metal detecting on my land?

Allowing metal detecting on your land can potentially uncover valuable artifacts or historical items that can provide insight into the history of your property. It is also a fun and exciting hobby for metal detectorists 🙂

How can I be sure my land will be respected?

We are respectful of property and follow a code of conduct. It is also a good idea to establish guidelines or boundaries with us and to communicate any specific concerns or areas to avoid on your property.

How often and for how long will you detect?

This can vary depending on the size of the land and specific areas of interest. We can discuss with you to determine a suitable schedule and duration for searching on your property.

How do you share your finds with the land owner?

Before we start detecting we sign a permission agreement form with the landowner which includes an agreement of how finds will be shared. This sets out how the value or rewards arising from the recovery of any property or objects is divided between the detectorist and landowner. Normally any significant finds are divided 50/50.

What if I want to keep any of the finds you make?

If you have a particular interest in any of the findings, we can negotiate a percentage of the value with the detectorist.

Do I need to be present whilst you metal detect?

It is not necessary for you to be present while metal detectorists are on your land, but you are welcome to join and observe if you wish. You can also discuss with the detectorist the preferred method of communication for any significant finds.
