Royal Artillery Hat Badge

1939-1945
Godalming
About Smokeless Heat Logs

This cap badge bears the field gun of the Royal Artillery with the crown above and the proud mottos Ubique, meaning Everywhere, and Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt, meaning Where Right and Glory Lead. It symbolises the regiment’s duty, reach and long service to the Crown.

Godalming has a strong Royal Artillery connection. In November 1940 two wartime regiments were formed in the town when 101 Light Anti Aircraft and Anti Tank Regiment was reorganised. The new units were 76 Anti Tank Regiment Royal Artillery and 61 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery, both assembled at Godalming before moving to overseas theatres.

This badge may therefore have belonged to a gunner training or billeted in the Godalming area during that busy period of reorganisation and mobilisation. As a small personal item it offers a human link to the many artillerymen who passed through Surrey on their way to active service.
