Our search for the lost location of the Battle of Aclea has just taken a huge step forward. We have secured a brand new 500 acre permission on Leith Hill in Surrey. This is an incredibly exciting development for us, as it sits close to a site where archaeologists previously uncovered human remains and has been suggested is one of the possible locations for this lost battle ground. Could this be one of the possible locations of the famous ninth century clash?
For those not familiar with the story, the Battle of Aclea was fought in 851 AD between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle tells us that it was a major victory for the West Saxons, but the exact site of the battle has been lost to time. Historians have debated many possible locations across Surrey, Ockley and Leith Hill has long been one of the candidates.
Now, with access to such a large area of land, we finally have the chance to explore it properly with our detectors. The potential here is enormous. Will we find sword pommels, fragments of armour, or even coins that might hint at the armies that clashed here more than a thousand years ago? We cannot know until we start, but the possibilities have us buzzing with anticipation.
Even if we do not uncover direct battlefield evidence, every find tells us more about how the land was used in the past. Buttons, buckles, coins, and everyday items help us build a picture of life on Leith Hill across the centuries. And who knows, among the usual signals could be something extraordinary.
We will be documenting every step of this journey. Our YouTube channel will feature regular videos from the site, so you can follow along as we begin this exciting new chapter in our hunt for the Battle of Aclea.
History is beneath our feet. Will Leith Hill reveal its secrets? Stay tuned, we are about to find out.
