From Field to Finger – A Ring Forged from the Past

About Smokeless Heat Logs

One of the most rewarding parts of metal detecting isn’t just uncovering history, it’s seeing that history given a new life.

While detecting on our landowners’ property in the Surrey Hills, Murray made two lovely silver discoveries: an old silver ring and a George V sixpence. Both pieces had clearly been lost many decades ago, likely dropped by someone travelling across or working on the land in years gone by.

As always, the finds were shared with the landowners, and what happened next was something truly special.

Using the silver from the finds discovered on their land, our landowner’s wife had a beautiful ring created. The old silver ring was carefully melted down and reused to craft a new ring and mount, which now holds the George V sixpence at its centre. The result is not only striking in appearance, but deeply meaningful.

What makes this piece so special isn’t just the craftsmanship, it’s the connection. The silver once lay hidden beneath their fields, lost by someone whose story we may never know. Now, decades later, it has been transformed into something that can be worn, treasured, and passed down through generations.

For us, this is what responsible metal detecting is all about. It’s not just the excitement of the find, it’s preserving the story, respecting the land, and sharing discoveries with those who own and care for it.

Seeing history come full circle like this is incredibly rewarding. A lost coin and an old silver ring have become something personal, sentimental, and lasting, a beautiful reminder that the past is never too far beneath our feet and something to be cherished.
