We’re delighted to have another Bearded Bleepers feature appear in Treasure Hunting Magazine, this time with an article written by our very own Murray Price about his experience at The Big Dig 2026.
The Big Dig took place near Ticehurst in East Sussex, bringing detectorists together for several days of metal detecting across more than 700 acres of farmland.
Taking on The Big Dig
Anyone who has attended a large detecting rally will know that it’s a very different experience from spending a day on one of your regular permissions. With hundreds of acres available, choosing where to detect can be almost as important as what you swing over.
Murray attended the rally and documented the experience for Treasure Hunting Magazine, from arriving and getting out onto the fields to the finds, atmosphere and realities of detecting such a huge event.
As is often the case with metal detecting, the weekend wasn’t about uncovering a hoard of gold every few minutes. Among Murray’s finds was an interesting 18th–19th century clog clasp, alongside the assortment of objects that tell the story of people who have lived and worked on the land over the centuries.
That’s all part of what makes detecting interesting, you never quite know what the next signal is going to reveal.
From the Field to Treasure Hunting Magazine
Following the rally, Murray was invited to put the experience into words for Treasure Hunting Magazine, covering The Big Dig from a detectorist’s point of view.
The finished article has now been published, giving readers a taste of what it was like to attend one of the UK’s large-scale detecting rallies and spend several days searching such an enormous area.
It’s great to see another Bearded Bleepers adventure make it into print and to be able to share some of our experiences with the wider metal detecting community.
